Written by Patrick White

A Cheery Soul is a surreal satirical masterpiece set in the fictional Sydney suburb of Sarsaparilla at the end of the 1950s.

Miss Docker is one of Nobel Laureate Patrick White’s most memorable creations. She and her neighbours are as hilarious and peculiar as they are uncannily familiar.

Miss Docker the delightfully ghastly, relentlessly upbeat ‘cheery soul’ takes us on a dizzying ride through suburban Australia, as her search for purpose and love leads her in a series of increasingly surreal acts.

From over-pruned tomato plants, a damaged roast, a nursing home, a church and the destructive power of good.

Nothing’s as bad as a good neighbour

THE REVIEWS ARE IN …

The entire cast, under the direction of Peter Goers, are brilliant, as each character highlights a demographic of society that is impacted by Miss Docker - InDaily

“Martha Lott plays the difficult role of Miss Docker to the hilt.”

Lott’s mobile face slides from simpering care and concern to steely determination and finally in a beautifully lit close-up by lighting designer, Martin Smith, piteous, helpless tears. Again, Lott is a ‘master’ of her craft. - Stage Whispers

Miss Docker, a one-woman demolition crew, is brilliantly played by Martha Lott - Broadway World

The performance was truly magnetic – both compelling and grotesque, making it hard to look away. There is not much Martha can’t tackle as far as a role goes, and if she can’t, it wouldn’t be worth doing anyways. - On Your Markus

...his angst is immeasurable and David rises to this challenge and conquers albeit only to crumble in a dramatic breakdown at the end with his character. - On YOur Markus

Amelia (Lott-Watson) is splendid as the gum popping teenager with attitude. - OnYour Markus

The entire cast, under the direction of Peter Goers, are brilliant, as each character highlights a demographic of society that is impacted by Miss Docker - InDaily

Cusenza and Campbell are wonderful in their portrayal of Mr and Mrs Custance, capturing both a stiffness and resistance to the outside world, and a warmth between them as a married couple. - InDaily

Her move to the Sundown Home for Old People is inevitable as is the ire of the other residents played beautifully by Sue Wylie and Jo Coventry. These two deliver some of White’s lines in what appears to be a trance state, uncovering hidden flaws and hopes, while David O’Brien as Mr Anstruther reflects the lack of care or interest in the residents. - Theatre Review

Sandi McMenamin as the elderly Miss Scougall, the Church Organist, …. Her attention to detail, including nodding off judiciously when things are all too much, is delightful. - Stage Whispers

The cast that endure Miss Docker are outstanding. In order of appearance… Sandi McMenamin, Catherine Campbell, Robert Cusenza, Christopher Cordeaux, David O’Brien, Jo Coventry, Sue Wylie, David Arcidiaco, Amelia Lott-Watson, Jessica Corrie & Ron Hoenig ALL somehow keep straight faced in the hilarity and absurdity that is thrown their way. Sandi slays the organ with utter vibrance and a terribly awful yet fabulous singing voice. Amelia is splendid (And a rising theatrical star to watch) as the gum popping teenager with attitude. Mr Wakeman (Arcidiaco) is pained and tortured while being the object of Dockers affection, his angst is immeasurable and David rises to this challenge and conquers albeit only to crumble in a dramatic breakdown at the end with his character. There are engaging and powerful monologues (and timed-to-perfection duologues). And the frustration each of them individually experience at the hands of Docker is wincing. Bravo to this dynamic cast. - On Your Markus

“…we audience members leave Holden Street yet again with the knowledge that we have experienced something exceptional.

When one leaves the theatre, Miss Docker comes too.” - The Barefoot Review

Bravo to this dynamic cast.

The performance was truly magnetic – both compelling and grotesque, making it hard to look away.

One moment you’re chuckling at an awkward social interaction, and the next, you’re hit with a wave of existential dread. -On Your Markus

A Cheery Soul on the surface is satirical comedy. In reality, it is multi-layered and thought provoking.

Once again, Holden Street Theatres deliver great value entertainment. - Stage Whispers

PETER GOERS - DIRECTOR / DESIGNER

Goers has used a whimsical ‘sea’ of multi coloured crocheted rugs to create the set. Crocheted pieces are everywhere, including the minister’s vestments. Chairs, cushions, table covers, costumes and props use this unifying visual theme. It is unique, consistent and evocative. - Stage Whispers

Direction was by Peter Goers who also designed the production using an authentic wardrobe with assistance from Brian Budgen and Anne Wills including an unending supply of crochet on the set. - Theatre Review

Direction and Staging: A Masterclass in Subtlety

The direction of A Cheery Soul was nothing short of brilliance. The minimalistic set design (again every inch simply draped in a stunning array of textured, patterned and coloured crochet work) helped focus attention on the characters and their interactions. It was the subtle choices – like the eerie lighting shifts in ultraviolet (Was it to mimick the blue rinse set? Clever) and the haunting, sparse sound design – that built the play’s unsettling atmosphere. Peter Goers, our acclaimed director, managed to keep the audience on edge, unsure whether to laugh, cringe, or simply stare in disbelief. A champion for our mature actors and a supporter of the up-and-coming, Peter is an Adelaide gem when it come to theatre, his talent, and execution of, is exemplary. I have not seen Peter deliver anything other than sheer thought-out perfection.
