England & Son

Presented by Holden Street Theatres' Edinburgh Fringe Award '23 In association with Home Manchester and Tin Cat Entertainment

#

'Any nation that devours another will one day devour itself.' This is a one-man play written for Mark Thomas by award-winning playwright Ed Edwards (The Political History of Smack and Crack). With some deep, dark laughs – and some deep, dark love – England & Son emerges from characters in Mark’s childhood and Ed's lived experience in jail. Prepare to be taken on a kaleidoscopic odyssey where disaster capitalism, empire, stolen youth and stolen wealth merge into the simple tale of a working-class boy who just wants his dad to smile at him.

Previous praise for England & Son

★★★★★ "It is rare a production is so powerful that as it ends, an audience springs to ovation only to then exit in almost complete silence. England and Son is exactly such a rarity! A “must see” of this year’s Fringe." The Recs

★★★★★ “Searing one-hander written especially for Mark Thomas.” Fest

★★★★★ “Very humorous and deeply moving. Don’t miss this!” North West End UK

★★★★★ "Mark Thomas takes you on a powerful cinematic journey through ecstatic highs and bone-crushing lows.” Edinburgh Reviews

★★★★ 1/2 "It certainly hits home with today’s audience, who rise as one to give Thomas a standing ovation." Bouquets & Brickbats

★★★★ “It’s an absolute recommendation” British Theatre Guide

★★★★ “Tremendous energy and real pathos” The Stage

★★★★ “It’s ultimately a pitiful tale, but Thomas – restless, agile and giving us a twisting, 360 degree portrait of a bruiser – brings to the role his own earthy, battle-hardened charm.” The Telegraph
